When to See the Doctor

Most back pain, when caused by lifting a too heavy object or overreaching, usually goes away on its own after several days. In more than 95 percent of acute lower back pain cases, the cause of the pain is not serious.
See the doctor if you have:
- Pain is intense, especially at night.
- Back pain following an accident.
- Weakness, numbness, pain or tingling in legs or arms.
- Loss of bladder control or bowel control.
- History of cancer.
- High fever.
- Unexplained weight loss.
