Generally, if you are in good shape and exercise regularly, you can usually start exercising again without a specialist. If your pain persists, your doctor may refer you to a physical therapy specialist or a back (orthopedic) specialist.
A physical therapist can:
- Guide you when you are not comfortable starting an exercise program on your own or need help starting a home exercise program.
- Help you start a back therapy program that is specific to your individual needs.
- Make sure you are doing your back exercises correctly.
- Help you understand the difference between pain and soreness.
See a back (orthopedic) specialist if:
- Your back pain is not better in three to four weeks.
- You have weakness that interferes with your ability to walk.
- You have any increase in your weakness.
- You have new problems walking.
