Diagnostic Tests

Lab tests include a complete blood count and an erythrocyte sedimentation rate test, a screening used for many diseases. This is a blood test, looking at how red blood cells settle in a test tube. These two tests are especially important if you have a new onset of headaches, are older than 55, have tenderness over your temples or problems with vision.
- Pregnancy test. If you are of childbearing age and your doctor is considering putting you on a medicine such as Midrin® or triptans.
- An electrocardiogram (EKG) should be done for anyone with a history of heart problems BEFORE starting treatment with beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, tricyclic antidepressants or triptans.
- Lumbar puncture (LP). This test may be done if you have fever or if there is a concern that you have blood around the brain. A needle is inserted into your spine to check your spinal fluid.
Other times tests should be done
Any time your headache symptoms are severe and are associated with visual problems, difficulty walking or maintaining your balance, fevers are present, neck pain or any other abnormal signs exist.
