Risk Factors

Stress affects each of us differently. No two people can experience a similar situation like a wedding or the death of a loved one in the same way. A stressful situation doesn't have to be a negative event such as a divorce. It could be as happy as the birth of a child.
Risk factors for feeling stressed out include:
- A health stress such as getting open-heart surgery or developing cancer.
- Mental disorders such as anxiety disorders and depression. People who have mental disorders might not be able to pinpoint specific causes of their stress. But they can be under intense stress most of the time.
- A lack or loss of social support networks.
- Not taking care of yourself by exercising and eating right.
- Either taking care of someone who is dependent on you or being the one who needs care from others.
- The environment, such as a demanding job.
- Self-criticism and poor self-esteem.
- A major change, such as a divorce or a marriage.
- A traumatic event, which may lead to post traumatic stress disorder - a serious mental illness that usually needs treatment.
Other risk factors include feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, extreme fear or anger, and cynicism or distrust of others. Look out for signs of depression or anxiety disorders if stress goes on for a long time and feels overwhelming. If it is, see your doctor.
