When to see the doctor

Without treatment, an anxiety disorder can worsen and have devastating impacts on lives, families and careers. Anxiety doesn't usually go away by itself. Untreated or poorly treated anxiety disorders could lead to panic attacks, phobias and depression. Some people become addicted to drugs or alcohol when they try to "medicate" their symptoms.
If the symptoms affect how well you live, you should see a health care professional. That can include a primary care doctor, a therapist, social worker, psychologist and a psychiatrist.
Sometimes a treatment plan may not be working for you. If so, schedule an appointment to see your doctor or choose another one.
If you have thoughts or ideas of harming yourself or others at any time, call you doctor IMMEDIATELY or go IMMEDIATELY to the nearest emergency room. If you feel that the situation is imminent, CALL 911.
