Symptoms

About 90 percent of those who are diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma first see their doctor for chest pain or shortness of breath.
- Shortness of breath. Shortness of breath is often due to a malignant pleural effusion, or a collection of fluid around the lungs that contains cancer cells.
- Chest pain. Chest pain is often caused by invasion of mesothelioma into nearby ribs.
- Pain or swelling in the abdomen. About 20 percent of malignant mesotheliomas begin in the abdominal lining and cause abdominal pain and swelling.
Other common symptoms include:
- Cough
- Fatigue
- Unexplained weight loss
